Designing with Daylight Online Course

This online program covers basic motives behind using glass to maximize the natural daylight entering a building. In addition, concepts to minimize heat gain which can occur as a result will be reviewed. Through audio and visual references you will learn the meaning of the term “daylighting” as well as three types of light associated with it. There will also be information from studies conducted illustrating the positive effects of natural daylight.

Not currently available, so don’t forget to check back. The program will be available soon!

Educational Resources
At Viracon we continually work with professional organizations and firms worldwide to provide AIA registered educational seminars. As a registered provider with AIA/Continuing Education System (AIA/CES), architects can earn 1.5 learning units (LU's) with AIA/CES, including health, safety and welfare credits.

For your convenience, you can schedule a presentation by contacting us at glass@viracon.com or calling 800-533-2080.

EARN 1.5 LU'S/1.5 HEALTH, SAFETY,
WELFARE LU'S:

Commercial Glass School #VI0197
An interactive presentation providing an overview of basic glass processes, glass history and fabrication techniques. We'll review the benefits of high-performance reflective and Low-e coatings on glass. We'll also discuss potential problems faced by the designer when using fabricated architectural glass products. The last topic for review will be the differences between soft (sputtered) coated glass products and their pyrolytic counterparts.

Aesthetics of Glass #VI0306
An exploration of glass and glazing options which influence the overall building aesthetics. The program starts with looking at individual glass choices available such as colors, coatings, ceramic frit pigments and more. In addition to verbal discussion, photographs of product features are shown on finished buildings as a means of visualizing the aesthetic effects. After reviewing the individual options, participants will learn how glass features can be combined and incorporated together within finished projects.

Glass: Supporting Sustainable Design #VI0707
This interactive program covers the basic principles of sustainable design as they relate to glass. In addition it provides an overview of how glass can help achieve points in the US Green Building Council’s LEED rating system. Various products used in the glass industry will be discussed. Specific examples of projects with a sustainable focus will be referenced. This program is best suited for architects, specifiers, mechanical engineers and other design professionals with a thorough knowledge of glass products used in commercial building applications. The basics are not covered in this presentation and can be obtained through other Viracon presentations such as Commercial Glass School and Aesthetics of Glass.

Customizing with Glass #VI0297
An interactive presentation providing a unique methodology by using glass, pvb interlayers, coatings and silkscreen patterns to customize an architectural glass design project. We'll review current processes that address the demands of the architectural design community. You'll learn how to harmonize aesthetics and solar control by using the latest generation of solar control coatings. We'll discuss the different types of vacuum deposition, solar reflective and Low-E coatings and how they can be used to "fine-tune" glass performance and appearance.

Designing with Daylight #VI0397
An interactive presentation with a novel approach in maximizing natural daylight while minimizing heat gain into a building. We'll review the psychological benefits from windows and natural daylight and their positive effects on health, comfort, buying, productivity and employee absenteeism. We'll also show you how different window designs and makeups affect viewing, occupancy comfort and energy efficiency. You'll also learn how to tailor your design and daylighting needs using different glass colors, coatings and glass makeups.

Protective Glazing Products #VI0102
An interactive presentation including: Blast video illustrations of product performance; Defining protective glazing products used for specific threat classifications; Identifying building codes and standards utilized in the protective glazing market; Gaining an understanding of the characteristics of laminated glass product options and how they perform.

Hurricane-Resistant Glass (HRG) #VI0897
A discussion of the features and limitations of hurricane-resistant glazing products and testing requirements for coastal regions.

Silk-screened Glass: Design Your Performance #VI0999
A discussion of the unlimited uses for silk-screened glass as well as instructions on the positive attributes silk-screened glass has with structural aesthetics, glare reduction, increased solar performance and creation of light-play applications.

Laminated Glass: Protecting You #VI1099
A discussion about the benefits of using laminated glass, whether to control a building's environment or to enhance safety and security and where it is required by code. The program offers case studies for architectural and security applications.

Glass Performance Pitfalls #VI1199
A discussion of the inherent characteristics that occur in fabrication of commercial glass products. The program covers distortion in heat-treated, glazing distortion, insulating glass evaluation, edge quality, breakage and glass staining.

The Future of Glass: From Passive to Active Materials #VI1299
An introduction to new glass-related products being researched and developed for the commercial market. There is also plenty of discussion related to existing products' coating techniques including reflective, anti-reflective and Low-E coatings, building-integrated photovoltaic, new coating techniques, electrochromics, holograms and integration of these products.

Balancing: Energy & Design Codes #VI1303

Architects can design a building the way they want and still meet energy codes. Specifiers are able to spec products that meet energy guidelines. Participants are able to analyze performance criteria to better understand energy saving requirements.
